Mindray/ZONARE Sets Sail with POC Ultrasound Learning on Flagship Cruise Featuring Daniel Lichtenstein, MD and More
St. Petersburg, FL (PRWEB) December 15, 2016 -- Use of ultrasound as a diagnostic tool in point-of-care (POC) medicine has grown dramatically over recent years and continues to grow globally. To help address the need to train healthcare professionals on the successful use of this important imaging modality and to make it more accessible even in remote locations, Mike Welsh, MD, a 20-year healthcare practitioner, founded Point of Care Ultrasound Learning, in 2012. Recently, Welsh partnered with Mindray/ZONARE to help support his hands on POC ultrasound course during a five-day cruise in the Caribbean scheduled for December 31, 2016 – January 5, 2017.
“We have attracted a very talented group of POC ultrasound educators including Daniel Lichtenstein, MD, considered to be the father of critical care ultrasound,” said Welsh. “ We are also very thankful to have Mindray/ZONARE partner with us in this important endeavor. In addition, we are committed to helping train clinicians volunteering for medical missions in underserved locations around the world by waiving the course fees.”
For the catalyst regarding his latter contribution, Welsh cites a survey published in the U.S. National Library of Medicine last year entitled Perceived Barriers in the Use of Ultrasound in Developing Countries. In the survey, the authors report that while equipment requirements, including maintenance and cost of machines, are important factors. Healthcare providers in the developing world identified lack of training as a primary barrier to regular use of ultrasound.
“Basically, our goal is to help ‘train the trainer’ by offering this assistance to those who have graciously volunteered their time in these parts of the world,” Welsh explained. “We believe if we can get this critical modality into the hands of medical providers in underserved geographies, it can become a mainstream tool in diagnostic decisions.”
The course for non-volunteers is offered at $750 plus cruise fares. Participants can earn 17 AMA PRA Category 1 credits upon completion. In addition to Drs. Welsh and Lichtenstein, other faculty members include Brian Baxt, MD and Victor Penna, MD.
