Minions to Take Over MitoAction Energy Walk & 5K to Raise Awareness
Boston, MA (PRWEB) July 30, 2016 -- Comeau’s Mito Minions will be participating in their third MitoAction Energy Walk & 5K on Sunday, Sept. 18 to help raise awareness about the disease that affects their two main Minions, Samantha and Erica Comeau.
“MitoAction is an awesome organization that helps families learn about Mito,” said Gretchen Comeau, team captain and mom of the Minions. “MitoAction also holds many different seminars and workshops that help us get the answers when it comes to all aspects of handling mitochondrial disease.
“I would like to thank MitoAction for holding this event every year to help raise funds to combat mitochondrial disease,” Comeau said. “Also, thank you for all the seminars, classes, and help lines. Without those things, it would be so much harder for parents and patients living with mitochondrial disease.”
The 12th annual MitoAction Energy Walk & 5K, presented by Stealth BioTherapeutics, will be held Sunday, Sept. 18, 2016, at DCR’s Mother’s Rest in South Boston, MA. This family-friendly event, designed to raise awareness about mitochondrial disease and funds for MitoAction, features a walk, a scenic 5K, and a day of fun for all ages and abilities. While the walk is located in Boston, MA, MitoAction has virtual walkers and runners all over the country. For more information and to register as a walker, runner, or virtual participant, visit http://www.mitoaction.org/walk.
Mitochondrial disease, or “Mito,” is an inherited chronic illness that can be present at birth or develop later in life. It causes debilitating physical, developmental, and cognitive disabilities with symptoms including poor growth; loss of muscle coordination; muscle weakness and pain; seizures; vision and/or hearing loss; gastrointestinal issues; learning disabilities; and heart, liver, or kidney failure. About 1 in 4,000 people has Mito. It’s progressive and there is no cure.
Comeau’s Mito Minions, named because Samantha and Erica love the Minions, boasts about 20 team members.
“My favorite part of the walk is the high energy shown by all the volunteers,” said Comeau of Bradford, MA. And the team’s favorite memory? Taking a team photo with Blades, the Boston Bruins mascot.
