Mira Peck Breaks the Glass Ceiling in New Novel
Denville, N.J. (PRWEB) September 18, 2013 -- Over half a century after the feminist movement championed equality in the workplace, the glass ceiling still hangs above the heads of many women. A recent article from CNN Money finds that female graduates earn about $8,000 less than male graduates in the first years after leaving college. In her new novel, “My Men” (published by iUniverse), author and engineer Mira Peck tells the story of a young heroine’s struggle for recognition as a scientist and as a woman.
“Women have made gains, but we are still greatly underrepresented in the sciences and in leadership roles, especially at high levels of power and pay,” says Peck. “Until the presence of women in those areas is accepted as completely normal, Alina can serve as a role model to women and men who want to break the mold.”
Alina Sherwin knows what she wants and she’s determined to get it. As the daughter of two Polish immigrants living in Australia in the 1960s and 70’s, Alina is swept away by the feminist movement spreading across the globe. She becomes the first woman to graduate in her state with an engineering degree. She quickly learns, however, that her new industry is not so ready to accept her. As the job hunt grows harder, Wayne, Alina’s new American husband, convinces her to return with him to the United States.
Wayne’s love appears to come with a price. When he asks her for an open marriage, Alina is shocked and intrigued. As the two hitchhike their way across Asia and back through Europe to Poland, Alina learns to trust her heart and finds the courage and inner strength to seek fulfillment in the United States.
“Many women, to be fulfilled, need a thriving professional career, as well as children,” writes Peck. “When confronted with prejudice denying your reality, believe in yourself and don’t give up.”
