Mirena Lawyers at Bernstein Liebhard LLP Look Ahead to Status Conference Next Week in New Jersey's IUD Litigation

According to a Calendar posted on the Court’s website, the meeting will take place at 2:00 p.m. on March 17, 2015. On that date the parties involved in Mirena IUD lawsuits, which allege spontaneous device migration and other complications that occurred after insertion of the birth control device, will discuss issues related to the cases. Mirena Lawsuits
Recent court documents indicate that nearly 1,800 Mirena lawsuits had been filed in New Jersey’s Bergen County Superior Court as of February 2015. These claims were filed by law firms including Bernstein Liebhard LLP and allege spontaneous device migration, uterine perforations and other problems its manufacturer, Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals, failed to adequately warn women about in its marketing of the IUD. Plaintiffs allege that the company has a history of overstating the benefits of Mirena and downplaying its risks. The company was advised against continuing such behavior in a Warning Letter sent by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2009.*
In addition to Mirena IUD lawsuits filed in New Jersey, a number of others are now pending in a federal litigation now underway in the U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York. The Mirena IUD was approved in 2000 as a contraceptive, and received additional clearance nine years later by the FDA for use in women seeking relief for heavy menstrual bleeding.**
