Mirena Lawyers at Bernstein Liebhard LLP Note New Findings Regarding Uterine Perforation Among IUD Users
New York, New York (PRWEB) February 06, 2015 -- The Mirena IUD lawyers (http://www.mirenalawsuit2014.com/) at Bernstein Liebhard LLP note the publication of new research findings regarding the potential for IUDs to perforate the uterus. The study, which was published last month in the journal Contraception, looked at more than 60,000 women implanted with either a levonorgestrel-releasing IUD , such as Mirena, or a copper IUD. The women were surveyed one year after receiving their IUD.*
Among other things, the authors of the study found that roughly 1.4 out of 1,000 women who used a levonorgestrel-releasing IUD suffered uterine perforation, compared to 1.1 out of 1,000 who used a copper device. They also noted that the majority of women who experienced this complication had previous risk factors, notably breast feeding. In fact, breast feeding at the time of implantation was associated with a six-fold increased risk of perforation, regardless of the type of IUD being used.
“The publication of this study comes as thousands of women pursue Mirena lawsuits that seek compensation for uterine perforations and other injuries allegedly caused by spontaneous migration of the IUD. The findings provide interesting insight about the potential for this IUD complication, as well as related risk factors,” says Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing victims of defective drugs and medical devices including Mirena. The Firm is currently representing plaintiffs in Mirena lawsuits, and is offering free case evaluations to women who allege uterine perforations and other serious complications related to spontaneous migration of the IUD.
Mirena Litigation
The Mirena IUD is a levonorgestrel-releasing device that was first cleared for sale by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in 2000 as a method of birth control. In 2009, the agency expanded Mirena’s approved uses to include the prevention of heavy menstrual bleeding in women who wish to use an IUD as their primary method of birth control.** Later that same year, the FDA issued a Warning Letter to Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals after finding that one of the company’s Mirena promotions made misleading claims about the safety and efficacy of the IUD.
According to court documents, more than 1,680 Mirena lawsuits are currently pending in New Jersey’s Bergen County Superior Court, where Bernstein Liebhard LLP is actively filing claims. (In Re: Mirena Litigation; Case No. 297) At least 1,160 additional lawsuits have been filed in a federal multidistrict litigation established in the U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York. (In re: Mirena IUD Products Liability Litigation, MDL No. 2434)
Court records indicate that all of these Mirena cases were filed on behalf of women who allegedly suffered uterine perforations, infertility, organ damage, and other complications after the IUD became dislodged months or even years after it was correctly implanted by a healthcare provider. Among other things, plaintiffs point out that the labeling for Mirena does not warn of the potential for spontaneous migration, but only warns that migration may occur if the uterus is perforated during insertion.
Women who allegedly suffered serious injuries due to spontaneous Mirena migration may be entitled to take legal action against Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals.
