Miss Black Illinois USA Organization Crowns Miss and Talented Teen 2014
Chicago, Illinois (PRWEB) October 24, 2013 -- It was an exciting night at the Harold Washington Cultural Center on Chicago’s Southside Saturday evening October 19th as young women from across the state ranging from ages 14-27, vied for the titles of Miss Black Illinois and Talented Teen 2014. Each woman demonstrated poise, intelligence and wellness in five various categories: personal interview, physical fitness, talent, evening gown and on-stage question.
Earlier that evening 14-year-old Alexandria Marie Du Buclet, wowed the judges with her vocal talents and was crowned Talented Teen 2014. Du Buclet is a freshman at Chicago Laboratory Schools and a member of Chicago Children’s Concert Choir
At the end of the evening Mariah Scott, Miss Black North Shore, a 20-year-old junior at DePaul University bested the contestants through a compelling spoken word performance to capture the crown as Miss Black Illinois 2014. Scott, a native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin will spend the year promoting the Miss Black Illinois USA’s community service initiatives and representing her own organization, SOUL “Speaking Out as Unified Leaders,” housed under DePaul University, which teaches creative writing and public speaking to marginalized youth 6th through 8th grade. Her organization has collaborated with schools in the inner city of Chicago helping at risk youth build on skills that will help academic advancement in pursuit of a higher education.
The top five finishers for the Miss division included 4th Runner up, Delilah Southerland, Miss Black South Suburban, 3rd Runner up, Covania Washington, Miss Black Western Illinois, 2nd Runner up, Yordanos Ghdey, Miss Black DuPage County, and 1st Runner up, Essence Allen, Miss Black Windy City. Miss Congeniality award went to Miss Black Chicago, Stephanie Racine. Miss Black DuPage County, Yordanos Ghdey also captured the photogenic award and Essence Allen, Miss Windy City took home the community service award.
Zoie Horton, Miss Chicago Talented Teen was first runner up in the teen division.
Both winners will compete in the Miss Black USA national competition next August.
The panel of judges included renowned clothing designer Mark Roscoe, Clarisa Wilson CEO of Namaste Laboratories LLC, former president of Fashion Fair Cosmetics LLC. Tracey Bell, reality show producer and Manager of Supplier Diversity – Retail for Walgreen’s, Linal Harris, International business professional, fortune 500-company executive, writer, speaker, entrepreneur, radio host and life coach and Chief Diversity Strategist for U.S. Cellular Corporation. Patrick Patterson launched Cuttin’ Up with Patrick Patterson, a series of videos that showcase his wide range of expertise in fashion and related topics and Ryan T. Hodge Founder and CEO of BFHSNetwork.com and BlackFolksHotSpots.com. His mission is to assist black businesses to be all they can be by giving them a low cost-effective way of reaching Urban Professionals.
