MOAA Responds to VA Health Care Report
Alexandria, Va. (PRWEB) July 08, 2016 -- The Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) generally supports the Veterans Affairs Commission on Care Report to Congress, released Wednesday, which contains 18 recommendations on how best to organize the Veterans Health Administration, locate health care resources, and deliver health care to veterans over the course of the next 20 years.
MOAA urged the president and congressional leaders in May 2014 to establish a high-level commission to examine the VA health system for the nation’s veterans in the 21st century because of reports of secret waiting lists at the VA medical center in Phoenix. This subsequently led to the passage of the Veterans’ Access, Choice, and Accountability Act of 2014 (Choice Act) and the establishment of the Commission on Care.
“The release of the VA Commission on Care Report is a culmination of 10 months of hard work by some of the top authorities in the field. While much more remains to be done, we appreciate the Commission’s sincere effort to strike a balance of sustaining and improving VA care delivery while enhancing civilian care opportunities. MOAA is grateful for their selfless dedication in producing this thoughtful and thorough report,” said MOAA President and CEO Lt. Gen. Dana Atkins, USAF ( Ret.).
“Along with our veteran service organization partners, we look forward to working with the president and Congress to translate the Commission’s recommendations into effective action,” Atkins continued. “In the meantime, we urge Congress to pass the VA secretary’s Consolidation of Care in the Community plan and the Veterans First Act (S. 2921) to help ensure our nation’s veterans receive the care they need and deserve today and in the future.”
