Modjeski and Masters To Inspect Walt Whitman Bridge
Mechanicsburg, Pa. (PRWEB) February 26, 2016 -- The bridge design and engineering firm Modjeski and Masters announced today that it will conduct a full hands-on inspection of the Walt Whitman Bridge facility for the Delaware River Port Authority (DRPA). The inspection will examine portions of the main bridge and the Pennsylvania and New Jersey approach structures.
The Walt Whitman Bridge is a suspension span that crosses the Delaware River, connecting Philadelphia to Camden County, N.J. Originally designed by Othmar Ammann, with design and construction assistance led by Modjeski and Masters co-founder Frank Masters, the bridge opened to traffic in 1957. It has a total length of 11,981 feet with a main span of 2,000 feet. The DRPA currently owns and operates the bridge.
“As one of two crossings carrying traffic into downtown Philadelphia, it’s vital to the local economy and population to keep the Walt Whitman Bridge well maintained and operating at full capacity,” said Michael F. Britt, PE, senior vice president and director of business development at Modjeski and Masters. “Our deep expertise in bridge inspections will ensure that this structure remains safe and accessible with minimal impact to the traveling public.”
Modjeski and Masters will conduct the field inspection over a six-week period starting in April 2016. The inspections will include hands-on examination the bridge’s steel main structure, concrete super and substructures, main suspension cables, suspender ropes, approach spans, truss deck pins and hangers and roadway surfaces and systems.
Modjeski and Masters recently worked for DRPA to inspect the Benjamin Franklin, Commodore Barry and Betsy Ross Bridges. The firm has an over 90-year history with DRPA, beginning with Modjeski and Masters co-founder Ralph Modjeski’s design of the Benjamin Franklin Bridge.
