Modjeski and Masters Wins ACEC Virginia Pinnacle Award
Mechanicsburg, Pa. (PRWEB) February 23, 2015 -- Modjeski and Masters received the American Council of Engineering Companies of Virginia’s (ACEC) Pinnacle Award at the Engineering Excellence Awards (EEA) Gala. The Pinnacle Award recognized the firm’s work on the Henry G. Gilmerton Bridge Replacement project as the best in the state for 2015. It is in addition to Modjeski’s accompanying 2015 EEA Grand Award for the Gilmerton Bridge.
The annual EEA recognize engineering firms for projects that demonstrate innovation, complexity, achievement and value to the industry. They were presented at a gala on February 5, 2015 at the Jefferson Hotel in Richmond, Va.
“We’re humbled that prestigious group of peers like the ACEC recognized the innovation and value of our work on the Henry G. Gilmerton Bridge,” said Michael F. Britt, PE, senior vice president and director of business development at Modjeski and Masters. “The logistics of the project made it such that we had to come up with something special. The Gilmerton Bridge is a signature achievement for Modjeski and Masters that will benefit the Tidewater region of Virginia for many years to come.”
The Gilmerton Bridge project replaced a double-leaf bascule span dating from 1938 that was a key Elizabeth River crossing in Chesapeake, Va. Its low clearance resulted in more than 7,500 lifts per year. Modjeski and Masters designed a new 250’ x 89’ lift span that could accommodate modern traffic loads while reducing the number of bridge openings by 40 percent. Using accelerated construction techniques, this new lift span was built offsite, floated down the Elizabeth River and set into place over the course of a single weekend.
