Monotype is Now the Exclusive Provider of Over 100 Fonts from the Stone Type Foundry

(Nasdaq: TYPE), a leading provider of typefaces, technology and expertise for creative applications and consumer devices, has become the exclusive distributor of more than 100 fonts from Sumner Stone of Stone Type Foundry Inc.

Examples of Stone’s work include the Magma™ design, a humanist sans-serif family that features regular, condensed and compressed styles to give designers a versatile typographic palette; the Silica™ family, which includes several weights from extra light to black; and the Basalt™ typeface, made up of all-capital letters. Basalt first appeared in signage at the Cecil H. Green Library at Stanford University. The ITC Stone® series, released in 1987 when Stone was director of typography at Adobe Systems Inc., is also available from Adobe and is the only commercially released Stone typeface that’s not part of Monotype’s exclusivity agreement.
Fonts from the Stone Type Foundry are available at MyFonts.com, Fonts.com and Linotype.com as OpenType® desktop fonts. Several of the fonts are also available as Web fonts. Over time, all fonts in the Stone collection are expected to be available as Web fonts.
Based in Rumsey, Calif., Stone founded Stone Type Foundry in 1990 and has designed virtually every typeface in the foundry’s library, with the exception of the ITC Bodoni design, which was created by a team of designers, led by Stone. In addition to creating typefaces for the retail market, Stone has designed custom typefaces for brand identities. His background includes work not only as a typeface designer but also as a calligrapher, graphic designer, mathematician, teacher, author, lecturer and almond farmer. During his tenure with Adobe in the 1980s, Stone established and implemented the Adobe® Originals program. He has been credited as being one of the first typeface designers to combine design and digital processes to create typefaces for the digital age.
