Monotype Typeface Designs Honored by Type Directors Club at TDC 2014 Competition
Woburn, MA (PRWEB) March 20, 2014 -- Three typefaces from Monotype Imaging Holdings Inc. (Nasdaq: TYPE), a leading provider of typefaces, technology and expertise for creative applications and consumer devices, were recognized at the TDC 2014 Typeface Design Competition held by the Type Directors Club of New York City.
Certificates of excellence in typeface design went to the Metro® Nova and Pizza Press typefaces, designed by Toshi Omagari and Terrance Weinzierl, respectively, from the Monotype Studio; and the MZhiHei™ (蒙納幟黑) typeface from Monotype Hong Kong, created by a team of designers led by Kenneth Kwok. Metro Nova was also honored with a judge’s choice award. All three typefaces will be shown in an international touring exhibition beginning this summer along with 24 other winning entries selected from nearly 200 submissions from 29 countries. The typefaces will also be published in the TDC’s hardbound annual, “Typography 35.”

Metro Nova
The Metro Nova typeface is the next-generation version of William Addison Dwiggins’ Metro design, released into the Linotype® library in 1930 as a sans serif typeface that was particularly popular in North America through the early 1950s. Metro Nova was created to meet today’s wide spectrum of digital and print requirements without sacrificing the appeal of the original Metro. “There were a number of idiosyncrasies in Dwiggins’ design,” said Omagari. “Addressing these was perhaps the most difficult yet most rewarding part of my work. That’s when Metro Nova became my own design.”
MZhiHei (蒙納幟黑)
The MZhiHei (蒙納幟黑) typeface, an ultra bold design that supports both the Traditional and Simplified Chinese writing systems, was designed primarily for designers, advertising agencies and creative professionals. “The typeface offers a unique, modern feel and is characterized by stiff and clean lines with high-contrast stroke weights that help to promote a strong message, while still providing high legibility at large and medium sizes – critical for Chinese advertising markets,” Kwok said.
Pizza Press
The Pizza Press family is a custom typeface created for one of the world’s largest pizza companies, Domino’s Pizza. Designed collaboratively between Weinzierl and the creative team at the advertising agency, Crispin Porter + Bogusky, Pizza Press was developed as a series of modular fonts that can be layered to add flexibility, variety and excitement. “To develop this chromatic typeface family, we used layering techniques to enable variety with colors and effects,” said Weinzierl.
