Monroe College's King Graduate School to Host Series of Talks on Global Impact of Expanding Economic, Political, and Cultural Partnership Between Israel and China
Flushing, NY (PRWEB) December 08, 2015 -- Monroe College, a national leader in urban and international education, today announced its King Graduate School would be hosting a series of informational talks to be led by invited guests on Israel's shifting attention toward China as a key economic, political, and cultural partner. The first one will take place on December 9.
Since first establishing diplomatic relations in January 1992, Israel and China have become increasingly influential political and economic allies. Indeed, as of last year, China -- Israel's third-largest trading partner -- eclipsed the U.S. as Israel's primary import partner, with $8.1 billion annually in goods originating in China compared to $7.4 billion in the U.S. An historic agreement signed between the countries earlier this year facilitating increased economic cooperation between the two countries and granting China expedited customs and trade privileges once solely extended to the U.S. further underscores the countries' strengthening relationship.
The first of Monroe College's informational talks will be held this Wednesday in Queens, home to one of the country's largest Chinese populations and Monroe’s King Graduate School extension site. Amir Sagie, Deputy Consul General of Israel in New York, will be the keynote speaker. Peter Koo, member of the New York City Council representing the local Queen’s community, and Shahar Azani, Executive Director for the Northeast Region of the international Israel education organization StandWithUs will also speak. Evan Jerome, Senior Vice President at Monroe College, will host the event and also make introductory remarks.
The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held from 3:00-5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 9 at the Sheraton La Guardia East Hotel at 135-20 39th Avenue in Flushing, Queens. Light refreshments will be served.
"King Graduate School is proud to bring such distinguished speakers together to share their perspectives and insights on the expanding relationship between Israel and China, and what it may hold for future trade in the region and with the United States," said Evan Jerome. "Israel has established strong economic and political ties with many Asian nations including China, but also realizes it needs to educate these communities on the importance of Israel as the only democracy in the Middle East. We are pleased to be able to host this event here as a service to our local community."
Amir Sagie is the Deputy Consul General of Israel in New York, where he coordinates the political work of the Consulate in the tri-state area, developing relations with national, state and local officials. He maintains regular contact with experts involved in major foreign policy and strategic issues at think tanks and universities across the region, and acts as the liaison for the Foreign Ministry with the national and local leadership of the Jewish Community based in New York. In addition, he coordinates interfaith dialogue and outreach nationally for the Foreign Ministry and its missions in the U.S. He holds a B.A. in East Asian Studies from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and graduated with honors upon receiving an M.A. in Political Science from Tel Aviv University. In addition to English, Sagie is conversant in Portuguese and speaks conversational Mandarin, after extensive training at Beijing Business College and Taipei Normal University.
Councilman Peter Koo was elected to the New York City Council in November 2009, and currently represents Flushing, Queensboro Hill, Mitchell Gardens, Kissena Park, Harding Heights, Auburndale; and part of Whitestone, in the borough of Queens. He is Chair of the Land Use Subcommittee on Landmarks, Public Siting and Maritime Uses, and is a member of the following Committees: Contracts; Cultural Affairs, Libraries & International Intergroup Relations; Health; Immigration; Land Use; and Small Business. After immigrating to America from Hong Kong in 1971, he worked minimum wage jobs to put himself through the University of New Mexico - College of Pharmacy, where he earned a Bachelors of Science degree.
