Monroe College to Host 8th Annual "America’s Best High School Chef Competition" on March 5
NEW ROCHELLE, NY (PRWEB) February 08, 2016 -- February 8, 2016 – Monroe College, a national leader in urban and international education, today announced that its eighth annual "America’s Best High School Chef" competition will be held on March 5. This national competition for high school seniors intending to pursue a college degree in the culinary or baking and pastry arts will take place at Monroe’s Culinary Arts Center in New Rochelle, New York.
High school seniors interested in participating in the full-day competition must apply online on or before February 12. As many as 48 students will be selected to participate in the culinary competition, with another 12 students invited to compete in the pastry category. The winners will be awarded full academic scholarships for the Associate Degree Program in Culinary Arts or the Associate Degree Program in Baking and Pastry Arts at Monroe College, as well as for the Bachelor’s Degree in Hospitality Management should they choose to continue their studies.

The culinary competition includes a series of three rounds comprising basic skills, salad basket, and mystery basket challenges. All students participating in the ABHSC culinary competition will be required to compete in the Basic Skills Round. The 16 students with the highest overall score in that round will move on to the semi-final Salad Basket Round. The top eight students from that round will progress to the Mystery Basket Round, which will require them to prepare and plate an elegant dish of their choosing created from a select set of ingredients. The winner of that round will be awarded the America’s Best High School Chef title and the academic scholarship. Additional scholarship funds will be awarded to those placing second and third in the competition.
The pastry competition requires the 12 selected students to prepare their signature upscale dessert within a 90-minute timeframe. It must include five key components: the main item, a sauce, a cookie or crisp item, chocolate and fruit. A photo of the dessert and detailed recipe and ingredients list must be submitted in advance as part of the application process.
Last year's winners -- Victoria Helwig in the culinary category and Keiry Palma in the pasty competition -- are now studying culinary arts and baking and pastry, respectively, with full academic scholarships at Monroe College. Ms. Helwig is also a freshman member of the culinary competition team at Monroe that was recently named the state champions for the second consecutive year.
Monroe College's Culinary Arts program is a world-class program that prepares students for professional careers in the culinary field. Taught by a faculty of experienced industry professionals, many of whom are certified by the American Culinary Federation, students gain valuable instruction and mentoring in a real-world culinary environment.
