Monroe College to Host Book Signing for Former Jamaican First Lady Beverley Manley on March 27
Bronx, NY (PRWEB) March 26, 2014 -- Monroe College, a national leader in urban and international education, today announced that it will host a book signing for Beverley Manley, former first lady of Jamaica and author of The Manley Memoirs, at its Bronx campus on March 27. The event is open to the public and will begin with an opening address at 6:30pm.
Monroe College has an established presence in the Caribbean with a campus on the island of St. Lucia. The book signing is the first event in a new Caribbean Culture Speaker Series initiative.
Ms. Manley, previously married to the late Jamaican Prime Minister Michael Manley, was the First Lady of Jamaica from 1972-1980. During this time, she assumed an activist role in the governing of the People’s National Party (PNP), strongly advocating for women and children’s rights. Previously, she worked at the Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation, where she became a popular broadcaster and media personality.
The discussion will focus primarily on The Manley Memoirs, an autobiography published fifteen years after her divorce from Michael Manley, which provides a candid account of her troubled upbringing, tumultuous and controversial marriage, and the political and social tensions that penetrated the country during her tenure. Ms. Manley is currently married to D.K. Duncan, a current Member of Parliament in Jamaica and a former member of Michael Manley’s cabinet.
“Beverley Manley is a renowned and influential figure who has a unique perspective to offer the local Jamaican community, having served as First Lady during some of the country’s most turbulent times,” said Stephen Jerome, President of Monroe College. “Her book has garnered significant attention, and she will undoubtedly provide an engaging discussion on both a political and personal level.”
Dr. Geneive Brown Metzger, former Jamaican Consul General and Monroe’s Director of Government Relations and Outreach for the Caribbean, who spearheaded the invitation, added: “Ms. Manley looms large in the discourse on women, gender, politics and culture in the Caribbean. It will be exciting having her on campus.”
The event will be held at the college’s Bronx Campus in King Hall, located at 2501 Jerome Avenue.
