Monroe College to Host Groundbreaking Ceremony for New Residence Hall, Classrooms at New Rochelle Campus
New Rochelle, NY (PRWEB) October 30, 2013 -- Monroe College, a national leader in urban and international education that is celebrating the 30th anniversary of its New Rochelle campus this year, will host a groundbreaking ceremony tomorrow for a six-story mixed-use building that includes a residence hall, academic space and cafeteria.
The 85,800-square foot building on Main Street will provide on-campus housing for 300 students. The new dormitory will enable the college to consolidate students from other disparate buildings in the downtown area to a central campus location. The lower floors will house seven classrooms, as well as a 250-seat cafeteria and offices for faculty and administrators. Construction is scheduled for completion in August of next year with the first students taking residency in the Fall 2014 semester.
Local dignitaries scheduled to attend the 3:00 pm groundbreaking ceremony tomorrow, Oct. 31, with Monroe College officials at 384 Main Street in New Rochelle, NY include New Rochelle Mayor Noam Bramson, City Manager Chuck Strome, Commissioner of Development Luis Aragon, BID Director Ralph DiBart, and New Rochelle Council Members Al Tarantino and Ivar Hyden.
"Tomorrow's groundbreaking for this new residence hall and classroom building begins one of our most exciting and ambitious mixed-use development projects here yet," said Stephen Jerome, President at Monroe College. "We've had the great privilege to call New Rochelle home for 30 years now, and are delighted to continue partnering in the downtown area's revitalization with this latest construction project."
Monroe College retained Susan Doban Architecture of Brooklyn, NY to design the new building. Doban, Monroe College's architectural firm partner since 2002, has played an instrumental role in bringing the college's vision for a cohesive, centralized college community in New Rochelle to life. This project is one of several that lead architect Susan Doban has overseen for Monroe College locally.
Based in the Bronx, Monroe College established its presence in New Rochelle in 1983. Since then, the campus has grown steadily, partnering with the city and its neighbors to develop and pursue a mutually beneficial master plan for integrating the college within the existing downtown area to create a more vibrant, robust community for both the college and city. Monroe has worked to renovate and repurpose older buildings in town for academic purposes and has won accolades within the architecture and design sector.
Currently, Monroe College has six academic buildings, including a state-of-the-art Culinary Arts Center in the downtown area, and campus housing is provided for 1,000 of its 2,500 students across 16 local buildings. The Monroe Athletic Center, a 45,000 square-foot indoor arena that is home to the Monroe Mustangs athletic programs, was added to the New Rochelle campus in 2011.
