Monroe College to Offer Undergraduate Program in Diagnostic Medical Sonography
Bronx, NY (PRWEB) June 01, 2016 -- Monroe College, a national leader in educating urban and international students, today announced that it is launching an associate (A.A.S.) degree program in Diagnostic Medical Sonography to meet the strong demand for qualified professionals trained to work with medical imaging technologies.
Monroe’s new Diagnostic Medical Sonography program is designed to prepare students to assist physicians in the proper collection and interpretation of anatomical data through ultrasound procedures. Demand for trained sonographers is expected to remain strong, with the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics forecasting a 24% growth rate for the sector, which notably outperforms other health specialties. Graduates of Monroe’s Diagnostic Medical Sonography program will be qualified for employment as a sonographer in state, local, and private hospitals, as well as physician’s offices, and medical and diagnostic laboratories.
“Demand for well-trained diagnostic medical sonographers is being driven by a number of factors, including the general medical needs of our aging population and the medical community’s increased use of cost-effective, non-invasive diagnostic methods such as ultrasounds,” said Dr. Leuda Forrester, Dean of the School of Allied Health. “We are excited to offer students a pathway into such a robust field with this new undergraduate degree program.”
The new Diagnostic Medical Sonography degree program will be offered by Monroe’s School of Allied Health starting in the fall 2016 semester. The curriculum is designed to provide students with critical knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and the different sonography specialties, as well as how to safely and correctly operate complex medical imaging technologies. Students will be provided the opportunity to work directly with health professionals while training, and will have the option to sit for the national certification examination upon program completion. The program’s curriculum follows guidelines from the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) and the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS).
Monroe’s School of Allied Health also offers associate degree programs in Medical Administration, Medical Assisting, and Pharmacy Technician, as well as bachelor’s degree programs in Health Services Administration and Public Health.
