Monroe Native, Author Todd McBroom, Reacts to ‘Duck Dynasty’ Scandal
Lafayette, Louisiana (PRWEB) January 28, 2014 -- Duck Dynasty, which recently premiered its fifth season on A&E to greatly diminished ratings from its previous season, has become a hot-button issue. The dramatic events, which transpired after the patriarch of the family, Phil Robertson, gave an interview with GQ in which he made controversial statements about both race and homosexuality, was a bit surreal for Todd McBroom. McBroom grew up in Monroe, LA, home of the notorious Robertson family. An entrepreneur, author, and speaker, McBroom is a proud Christian with a forthcoming book, God Was Self- Employed.
Being so familiar with the Robertson family, McBroom didn’t quite know what to make of the situation. He’d never known the family to be anything but pleasant; they are known and valued community members, even after the show on A&E has made them famous. Meanwhile, Phil Robertson’s comments were greeted with an uproar from groups such as the NAACP, Human Rights Campaign, and GLAAD, to name a few. However, when A&E suspended Robertson from the show, the backlash from Duck Dynasty fans was far greater, and even encompassed death threats to A&E CEO Nancy Dubuc.
“I see members of the Robertson family sometimes when I visit my hometown of Monroe,” says McBroom, who relocated to Lafayette only a few years ago. He has even attended church events with members of the Robertson clan, and, while he holds many of the same Christian and family values, McBroom acknowledges that the entire event seems to have been blown out of proportion. McBroom adds, “I can remember listening to Phil speak at our church in the 90s, his message has always been a message of love and God’s abundant grace.”
“As much as I’m in favor of what social media can do for business and marketing, it tends to facilitate extreme reactions to relatively minor celebrity or pop culture news,” he states. “The Robertson family has always seemed to me to be friendly and accepting.”
