Monster Energy Congratulates Its Athletes on Epic Performance at X Games Austin 2016

The four-day event at X Games Austin 2016 marked the last X Games that will be held in the Texan state capitol and drew significant crowds considering the severe weather conditions that included thunderstorms, flash floods and lightning, forcing two venue evacuations, cancellations of multiple competitions and concerts at Circuit of The Americas (COTA) with an estimated attendance of more than 100,000 fans.
For the opening night on Thursday, June 2, fans watched the Moto X Step Up finals and Flat Track at COTA where Monster Energy swept the podium in the Flat Track event setting the stage for a spectacular weekend of action to come with Jared Mees taking gold, and teammates Kenny Coolbeth, Jr. claiming silver, while Brad “The Bullet” Baker finished third.
In Skateboard Monster Energy dominated with five medals. In Skateboard Vert Sam Beckett earned his first gold medal and fifth career X Games medal. Despite fierce competition he secured the win on his flawless second run that earned an 89.33 point score.
In Women’s Skateboard Park Lizzie Armanto looked like the woman to beat with her signature fast-charging lines and powerful style. But competition was fierce on the sprawling concrete course peppered with a variety of hips, bowl corners, wallrides, and a centerpiece spine for air transfers and she ended with a strong silver-medal finish.
In Men’s Skateboard Street defending champion Nyjah Huston settled for silver after closely ceding the victory by fractions of a point earning his 12th X Games Skateboard Street medal. His teammate Ishod Wair won bronze, his first X Games medal.
In Skateboard Park Curren Caples walked away with silver covering every angle of the concrete park with speed and his signature effortless flow. The silver medal brings Caples’ X Games medal count to four (two gold, two silver).
In BMX Vert Monster Energy congratulates Jamie Bestwick on reclaiming gold and earning his 14th total X Games gold and his record 13th in BMX Vert. With a flair for new tricks, Bestwick’s originality and amplitude ultimately earned him the win.
In BMX Park Kyle Baldock took bronze, and a gold in the first-ever Dave Mirra Best Trick contest as a tribute to the BMX legend Mirra who tragically passed away in February. Hailing from Australia, Baldock has earned a reputation as an exciting and innovative rider, both in Park and Dirt riding.
In BMX Dirt Monster Energy athletes smoked the competition sweeping the medals on the BMX Dirt track. All said and done Kevin Peraza took his first X Games medal with the gold, Ben Wallace snagged his second silver in the discipline and James Foster rode away with the bronze.
Josh Sheehan, who made waves just over a year ago when he landed the sports first triple backflip at Travis Pastrana’s compound in Maryland is known for his commitment to his craft both physically and mentally. He didn’t disappoint leaving his mark on the muddied Texas course and rode away with a hard earned gold medal in Moto X Freestyle, his first at X Games. Sheehan also added two silver medals to his hardware collection in Moto X QuarterPipe and Moto X Best Trick. With a track record as one of Moto X’s most progressive riders as far as trick and innovation goes, it was no surprise that he was able to clinch silver.
Rookie Axell Hodges who made his X Games debut this year walked away with a silver medal in Moto X Best Whip along with his teammate Edgar Torronteras who took home a bronze.
Monster Energy’s sponsored Unknown’s Harley riders Nick Leonetti, Buddy Suttle, Kade Gates, and Logan Lackey were in Austin doing their incredible wheelie and smoke show for ESPN cameras and the X Games crowd.
Monster Energy also brought in noncompeting Monster Energy athletes to enjoy a weekend at X Games Austin 2016 including Luke ‘Dingo’ Trembath, snowboarder Danny Kass, snowboarder Zak Hale, and freeskier Jossi Wells.
To celebrate their athletes and VIPs, Monster Energy hosted ‘the’ party to hit featuring hip-hop star Juicy J to an over-capacity crowd. The Duffle Bag Divas, (DJ twins) were also in the house to set off the evening. Guests included Monster Energy athletes, Monster Energy Girls, industry VIPs, media and influencers.
