Monster Energy’s Chloe Kim Makes History by Being the First Female to Land Back to Back 1080s, And Earns a Perfect Score to Win the US Grand Prix in Park City
(PRWEB) February 06, 2016 -- Monster Energy’s Chloe Kim kept her winning streak going fresh off last week's X Games Aspen win with another easy victory, and a dominating performance at the US Grand Prix of Halfpipe in Park City, Utah where she became the US Halfpipe Champion. With a score of 96.5 in the bag already, Kim showcased a new trick combination, which pushed her score into a rare perfect 100.
“That run wasn’t 100 [laughs],” joked Kim. “But I’m really appreciative of the high score.” After dropping a nearly perfect run on her first go, Kim decided to up the ante and drop back-to-back 1080s (frontside 1080 to cab 1080), a combo she had previously only landed in practice at Winter X Games Aspen. But, the most incredible part is that she hadn’t planned on doing the cab 1080 at all for this event.
“It was crazy,” recounts Chloe. “I didn’t practice [the cab 1080] at all since I’ve been here and during the second run, [it] was the first time I did it this trip. I was really surprised when I brought it to my feet. I’m just so stoked I was able put that down and it’ll give me such a confidence boost going into X Games Oslo.”
It wasn’t just the back-to-back 1080s that gave Chloe a perfect score, but a fusion of aforementioned technical tricks, the highest amplitude of the day, and overall cleanliness. The winning run, started off with a massive backside air method grab into the first of the 1080s, a frontside 1080 tail. Then she landed the second of the 1080s, the cab 1080 stalefish. She finished things off with a lofty frontside 540-frontside grab.
The back-to-back 1080s weren’t just a new trick for Chloe, but rather they were a new combination for all of women’s halfpipe. While Chloe was the first to land the 10s, she wasn’t the first to eye them. “It’s crazy because I know that Kelly [Clark] was going for the back-to-back 10s,” explained Kim. “But I was so stoked and felt confident about the cab 10 and [threw] it down on my 3rd run. Kelly was there to help me out - coaching me. She’s an amazing mentor and I’m just super stoked.”
Today’s win brings Chloe’s 2015-16 winter podium count to four, after a second place at the Winter Dew Tour, a second at the first US Grand Prix in Mammoth, CA, the aforementioned win at the X Games Aspen, and with today’s US Grand Prix Park City win, Kim became the US Halfpipe Champion, icing on today’s cake. All smiles, Kim succinctly summed up the day and the run she had just put down, “Today was so perfect and I saw the opportunity to go for it, and I’m just really stoked.”
