Monster Energy’s Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone Defeats Alex Oliveira in Welterweight Debut at UFC Fight Night 83 at the CONSOL Energy Center in Pittsburgh, PA
Corona, Calif (PRWEB) February 22, 2016 -- Monster Energy’s Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone back in the win column after choking out Brazilian Alex Oliveira in just under three minutes at UFC Fight Night 83 at the CONSOL Energy Center in Pittsburgh, PA.
Cerrone had an amazing performance in Pittsburgh Sunday night, dispatching of fellow “Cowboy” Alex Oliveira in round one with an old standby, his beautiful triangle choke submission. After a disappointing championship loss at the hands of Dos Anjos, which broke Donald’s eight-win fight streak in the lightweight division, Cerrone took the next available fight —15 pounds up in the Welterweight division. Largely known as one of the most active fighters in the sport nobody was surprised at how quickly Cerrone looked to erase his last loss, but moving up a weight class always raises questions and curiosity.
A late replacement for Tim Means who failed a drug test, Alex “Cowboy” Oliveira matched up well against Cerrone for the assumed stand-up battle, and as the fighters entered the cage it was clear he was also the bigger man. As round one commenced Oliveira scored well with some hard knees to the body in the clinch, while using his length and power to back Cerrone, a notoriously slow starter, against the cage. Cerrone broke the clinch and took the center of the Octagon, only to absorb a combo from Oliveira. Cerrone responded with a well-timed trip, and take down that would quickly end the fight. While Oliveira scrambled, Cerrone easily took mount, and quickly locked in the triangle choke. The choke was so fluid and fast in fact, that he had to point to the referee that Oliveira was tapping. This is Cerrone's 16th finish by submission.
Afterward Cerrone said, “I get to do 155 and 170 now,” "Everybody - you want to get hurt? I know a guy."
Cerrone is a prolific figure in MMA, collecting 29 pro wins out of 37 fights total. He is one of Monster Energy’s elite MMA athletes and fan favorite, along with Dominick “Dominator” Cruz, “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey, Chris “All-American” Weidman, Anthony “Showtime” Pettis, Johny “Bigg Rigg’ Hendricks, Rory MacDonald, Cain Velasquez, and Daniel Cormier.
