Monster Energy's Gus Kenworthy Wins Air + Style's Inaugural Ski Title; Teammate Jossi Wells Takes Fourth Place
Pasadena, Calif (PRWEB) February 23, 2015 -- Monster Energy congratulates freeski team riders for their incredible performances at the inaugural Air + Style event at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. Gus Kenworthy took first place based on his round 1 overall score of 86.23, which was used as the final results after the finals were cancelled for safety reasons because of the constant rain and environmental conditions. Teammate Jossi Wells respectably landed in fourth place with a score of 85.12.
The event marks the first time the storied Air + Style contest series, under new ownership by Shaun White, allowed skiers to compete in an event that was traditionally exclusive to snowboarders. Despite the rain cut-short event, Kenworthy secured the $34,000 first place prize on the 160-foot tall, 70-foot jump in round one with his left double cork 1440 tail grab and also a left double cork 1080 tail grab. Although Kenworthy would have preferred skiing round 2 and the finals, he was happy to win the first ski title at the prestigious event.
"It’s not the coolest way to win, but still feels really good," said Kenworthy. "I would have loved to have had a final and tried to do a triple, and just get that kind of energy that you have in the finals. I was looking forward to that, but they told us going into the event that there was a good chance it might just be the qualifier and to try to qualify high so I did that and I am stoked on where I ended up."
"Air and Style is a huge event in my eyes," continued Kenworthy. "It has been a really cool tour and I was excited just to have the opportunity to be a part of it in LA with an incredible music line up and a bunch of family, friends and an awesome crowd."
Teammate Wells was able to secure fourth place in round 1 with a left double cork 900 safety and a switch left double cork 1080 safety, and was really excited to be a part of the first ski competition in the Air + Style event.
"I have watched the Air and Style events for a long time and always wanted to be able to compete here so it is really cool that Shaun White included us, and we got to ski in front of the crowd and hang in LA," said Wells. "The hospitality was amazing and it was sweet getting to watch really amazing artists in-between the times we were skiing."
