Monster Energy’s Jamie Anderson Wins the Inaugural Laax Open Slopestyle
Corona, Calif (PRWEB) January 24, 2016 -- Monster Energy’s Jamie Anderson makes a triumphant return after suffering a broken collarbone in December, and wins the inaugural Laax Open in the Swiss Alps.
Anderson made the last minute decision to come to Laax to compete and was a little worried coming into the competition after not having been on snow for nearly two months.
“I was a little nervous to ride again but I feel really strong and healthy again,” said Anderson. “[The injury] really just re-inspired me to send it harder and realize how much fun snowboarding is. Sometimes you need a little break to recharge the spirit and realize how awesome [snowboarding] is.”
The day didn’t get off to an auspicious start, with a fresh layer of snow on the ground and foggy, flat light permeating the air. After the event was postponed for a couple hours and the men’s and women’s contest times flipped, the women were ready to drop in in the late afternoon light.
“The weather was little bit crazy,” Anderson said of the conditions. “There were rumors that [the event] might be canceled due to wind and snow but nature was on our side. It was really snowy right below us, but it stayed really beautiful and clear. A little bit of wind, but for the most part we were in the good weather.”
Once the contest began, Anderson landed her first run which earned her a score of 81.10, almost 10 points more than the second place finisher. She kicked off her run with a backside bluntslide 270 out on the top rail feature. Then on the wave feature she threw her newly learned backside nose butter hand drag 540. Then the triple line saw Jamie drop a cab 540, frontside 720 and backside 540 in quick succession. On the quarterpipe, she did a quick fake air to set up the backside lipslide on the final rail.
More than the win, Anderson was equally as excited to get into the contest swing of things, with X Games Aspen 2016 coming next week. “I feel stoked to come back and hit some big jumps,” Anderson noted. “I haven’t really done any big tricks since Australia [last] summer. I felt really strong and kind of proud of myself. It’s hard to keep the spirits up when you’re hurt.”
Anderson finished second last year in Laax, when the event was known as the Burton European Open. This also marks Anderson’s second podium of the 2015-16 contest season.
