Monster Energy’s Sven Thorgren Wins Overall Air + Style World Tour Champion Title and Takes Third Place at the Air + Style Los Angeles Event
Corona, Calif (PRWEB) February 23, 2016 -- Monster Energy’s Sven Thorgren wins overall Air + Style World Tour Champion Title and takes third place at the Air + Style Los Angeles event that was held at the EXPO Park, LA Coliseum in Los Angeles, California.
Sweden’s Thorgren bookended his 2015-16 Air + Style Tour year with third place podium finishes, the former coming in Beijing, China in December and the latter coming in front of a raucous crowd in Los Angeles, CA where 24 of the world’s best big air snowboarders competed. Coupling the two podiums with a 6th place finish at the Air + Style event in Innsbruck, Austria Thorgren was named the 2015-16 Air + Style Overall Champion and was presented with the “Ring of Glory” as his trophy.
“It feels amazing,” said Thorgren on taking the tour tile. “I didn’t think it would happen. My contest riding has been upside-down as of late, but now I’m feeling like I’m getting my confidence back, and am excited about taking the tour title —that’s just insane. “I’m also so proud to have the Ring of Glory, said Thorgren.
Thorgren was in fact named the Overall Tour Champion before the contest was over when he secured a spot in the four-rider super final tonight, after a number of the snowboarders chasing the overall title were eliminated throughout the contest. This marks Thorgren’s first tour title at Air + Style, after Monster Energy teammate Ståle Sandbech took the title last season.
Thorgren’s road to the podium and tour title was a long and arduous affair in Los Angeles. After an unseasonable amount of rain followed immediately by ever increasing warm temperatures, which canceled the two practice days, the riders were presented with challenging conditions during the practice and Round One.
For Round One every athlete was given two runs with their best score being counted and the top 16 riders advancing to the next round. Monster Energy’s Sandbech finished in 3rd place, Darcy Sharpe finished 7th and Sven Thorgren qualified in 13th position, an unenviable position for Thorgren moving into Round Two.
In Round Two Thorgren prevailed and advanced to Round Three where he also advanced to the super final. The super final kept the two-score, three-jump format of Rounds Two and Three, but did away with head-to-head elimination, opting for a four-man rumble.
In the super final Thorgren’s scored two tricks were: a cab spinning double cork 1260 roast beef with two stylish shifties, and a backside flatspinning double cork 1440 stalefish.
“The crowd was sick, the weather was sick, and the jump was sick,” said Thorgren. So I think we had a pretty good contest. Usually in the super final people throw down and kind of bail out because they are going all in, but today it was a good super final and everybody killed it.”
With the conclusion of the super final, after the Tour winner was crowned, and after the champagne had been sprayed, we can now close another chapter on the Air + Style tour for the 2015-16 season.
Thorgren succinctly summed up his Los Angeles experience. “It’s so good to land in a contest and get up on the podium again.”
