Monster Energy's Vince Byron Earns First-Ever Gold Medal in BMX Vert at X Games Austin 2015
Austin, Texas (PRWEB) June 05, 2015 -- The Monster Energy team has taken the top two spots in BMX Vert today at X Games Austin 2015 with Vince Byron taking his first-ever gold. In doing so, Byron ended Jamie Bestwick’s run of nine gold medals, longest winning streak in X Games history—the legendary Bestwick finished right behind Byron with the silver medal.
Today was Byron’s first gold, though he’s no stranger to the X podium. This is the sixth X Games medal for the Australian across BMX Vert and Big Air events, including three previously in Vert.
Bestwick’s impressive winning streak along with Byron’s hunger to dethrone him set the stage for a high pressure battle to see who would take the gold. Byron’s first run gave him the early lead. With a goal of making his big tricks as smooth as his smaller tricks, Byron unleashed a perfect run, including a 540 flair for the first time at X. It’s a huge, dangerous trick and he’s the only one doing it. This creativity and progression gave him the big 92.00, a score that proved enough for the eventual gold.
“That run is so much weight off my shoulders, I’m so happy to get it done,” said Byron. “I couldn’t have done it without someone like Jamie keeping the level so high.”
Bestwick had a bit of trouble on his first run, but still pulled it together for the second half of his run to chalk up a 90.66—a great score, but not the perfection we’re used to seeing from Bestwick. On his second run he cleaned it up. He threw down an allie oop 540, front flip flair, and a no-handed flair among other smooth tricks, giving him a 91.00 and the silver.
“The future is in great hands, hats off to Vince,” said Bestwick. “He’s been knocking on the door so many years and I haven’t let him in. This is a true champion.”
