More Than 300 Sign 'Keep Argyle Safe' Petition to Prevent Beer, Wine Sales Adjacent to Elementary School
Argyle, TX (PRWEB) January 27, 2014 -- The petition launched last week by a group of concerned Argyle parents and citizens to defeat a city rezoning proposal has been signed by more than 300 Argyle residents, almost 10 percent of the town’s population. The proposed rezoning would allow the construction of a Brookshire’s Grocery store across the street from Hilltop Elementary School. Keep Argyle Safe is opposed to the zoning change, because the proposed Brookshire’s store would sell beer and wine directly across the street from the school and bring additional traffic to an already congested area. The zoning change was proposed with little public input or discussion.
“The fact that more than 300 concerned Argyle citizens have signed the Keep Argyle Safe petition is very significant,” Bryan Livingston, co-founder of Keep Argyle Safe said. “We were confident that when our fellow citizens became aware of the rezoning they would not be in favor of it. Most do not support the City of Argyle changing its policy on separation between establishments that sell alcohol and sensitive locations like our elementary school. The signatures on the petition prove that point. We all want a grocery store in Argyle, but not in the town green area.”
The petition will be presented to the Argyle Town Council when it meets at the Argyle Town Hall at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, January 28, to vote on the rezoning change. Keep Argyle Safe expects a large group of concerned citizens to attend the meeting to oppose the rezoning.
“We expect to have up to 400 signatures on the petition by end of day Tuesday to present to the Town Council,” Jay Miranda, co-founder of Keep Argyle Safe, added. “The safety of our children is at stake here, and we have not had a voice in the process. We are asking the Town Council to stop the rezoning process, so as a community we can work together to develop a solution that works for everyone.”
On Saturday, a group of Keep Argyle Safe citizens met with council member Jeff Cantrell at his regular Saturday mid-morning coffee. The group had a meaningful discussion with Dr. Cantrell about the proposed rezoning and safety and traffic concerns.
“We were pleased to meet with Dr. Cantrell and make him aware of our concerns about the rezoning proposal,” Emily Valentino of Keep Argyle Safe, said. “He was open to our discussion and to hear how troubled we are about the potential safety of our children. We also pointed to the change the rezoning would bring to our community’s character. We hope the other council members will be open to our point of view as well.”
