Morgan & Morgan Continues to Investigate Tylenol Lawsuits as FDA Recommends Lower Prescription Acetaminophen Doses

On January 14, 2014, the FDA announced that doctors should cease prescribing drugs with more than 325 mg of acetaminophen per dose, as there is no data suggesting that drugs with more than 325 mg of acetaminophen per dose provide any additional benefits that outweigh the risk of liver injury.** The affected drugs, known as combination drugs, often consist of an opioid drug and acetaminophen, including common pain killers such as oxycodone (Percocet) and hydrocodone (Vicodin), according to a January 16, 2014 article from CNN.com.*** Although the agency’s announcement only applied to prescription drugs, the FDA said that it would be addressing regulations for over-the-counter (OTC) drugs that contain acetaminophen, such as Tylenol, in a separate notice.
In its announcement, the FDA stressed that most acetaminophen overdoses are accidental, since many people do not realize that both prescription and OTC drugs can contain acetaminophen, making it easy for users to ingest too much of the drug. The agency has previously suggested that adults take no more than four grams of acetaminophen per day, a total of 4,000 mg; however, that amount can easily be surpassed with just eight Extra Strength Tylenol gel tablets, which contain 500 mg each, according to CNN.com.***
“People who take Tylenol are at risk even when taking the recommended dose,” said Laura V. Yaeger, a mass tort attorney with Morgan & Morgan. “The FDA and several studies indicate that even taking one gram over the recommended dose (four grams) can cause liver damage and lead to acute liver failure.”
