It’s no challenge to navigate this sale’s absolutely outstanding collection of antique porcelain signage. Examples from local, regional, and national brands are all on offer. Lot #16, a 28” Nourse Motor Oil sign featuring an orange and black Viking yielding a club is destined to be a big hit with collectors. It is estimated at $15,000-25,000. Lot #18, a red, black, and white 32” Red Hat Motor Oil and Gasoline sign is another auction headliner. It is estimated at $15,000-20,000. Lot #19, a red, white, and green 48” Sinclair Aircraft sign decorated with the company’s classic logo plane takes flight at $15,000-20,000. Lot #12, a red, white, black, and gold Billups Premium pump plate with dual airplane graphics is another elite sign election in this grouping. It is estimated at $8,000-12,000. And all eyes will be on lot #137, a hard to find, large rectangular Power-Lube Motor Oil sign featuring the company’s more friendly than fierce tiger logo. This jungle-gem is estimated at $10,000-20,000.
Now let’s switch our focus to the comprehensive selections of globes and lenses offered through this sale. Things are twice as nice with a number of top tier, dual lens selections. Collectors may go to battle over lot #35, 15” Independent Gasoline globe lenses, estimated at $9,000-12,000. The lenses are detailed with a colorful scene of a patriotic march, including musicians, armed soldiers, and an early American flag. Lot #40, 13-1/2" Buffalo Gasoline globe lenses on a milk glass body, is estimated at $4,000-6,000. Each lens is dynamically decorated with the company’s charging red and black buffalo logo. And lot #339, 13-1/2” Red Wing Anti-Knock Gasoline globe lenses, is a real head turner. These feature the company’s red and blue Indian Chief profile mascot and are estimated at $4,000-6,000.
This sale offers an astonishing array of single lens gas pump toppers. Two high fliers in this category feature airplane graphics. The first is lot #21, a 15” Kendall Gasoline lens. This example comes on a red metal body and features Kendall’s black and red propeller plane logo. The second is lot #22, a 15” Jenney Aero Gasoline lens. This black, white, and orange lens is decorated with the company’s logo against a twilight blue background. Both are certain to soar with their $12,000-15,000 and $15,000-20,000 estimates, respectively. Another solid choice of a single lens highlight would have to be lot #24, a 13-1/2” Rock Island Gasoline lens on its original ripple body. This red, blue, white, and teal rarity is estimated at $6,500-9,000.
July’s auction presents a number of items from the Gilmore Oil Company, the west coast petroleum distributor known for its dramatic promotions. Many feature the company’s popular logo mascot lion. Lot #192, a Roar with Gilmore lens decorated with the lion jumping over a checkered flag, is estimated at $8,000-12,000. Lot #193, a Gilmore Blu-Green Gasoline lens featuring a roaring lion head, is estimated at $8,000-12,000. And lot #191, a Gilmore Red Lion plus Tetraethyl lens springs to life with a lunging lion with dramatic, prominent claws and teeth. It is estimated at $12,000-16,000.
This sale rounds out with first class offerings of other transportation related collectibles, including ephemera, oil cans, displays, and other seldom seen rarities. These include lot #28, an original 13-1/2" blue ripple globe body, estimated at $7,5000-10,000; lot #234, an Alligator Boot Tire Repair tin store display, estimated at $2,500-4,000; and lot #52, a Conoco Minuteman handy household oiler, estimated at $700-1,000. And the heat will surely be on lot #46, a Red Hat Motor Oil & Gasoline porcelain thermometer, estimated at $4,000-6,000.
