Mosaic Sustainability Clients Neal Mast & Son Greenhouses Inc. and Mast Young Plants Receive Top CDP Score
Boulder, CO (PRWEB) January 12, 2015 -- Mosaic Sustainability announced today that its clients, Neal Mast and Son Greenhouses, Inc. and Mast Young Plants, have collectively received a disclosure score of 99 out of 100 on the 2014 CDP supply chain program questionnaire. The companies also received a climate change mitigation performance score of “A-,” the maximum score possible for small-to-medium enterprises (SME). This is the second year in a row that the companies have achieved this score.
One of the country’s largest growers of premier indoor and outdoor potted plants, Neal Mast and Son was initially launched as a sole proprietorship in the 1950’s by founder Neal Mast. The company has grown considerably over the past 20 years, with 222 full-time employees and customers in 48 states.
An in-house sustainability committee leads Neal Mast and Son’s triple bottom line efforts, which focus on energy and carbon emission reductions, water use, sustainable procurement practices, waste recycling, and community partnership. In its fifth year, the committee has already developed a company-wide recycling program that has collected over 700 tons of diverted waste since 2011. The company has also implemented energy efficiency projects such as LED bulbs and energy curtains that have saved the company more than 250,000 annual watts. The company is Veriflora Certified and Certified Organic and was recently named one of 2014’s Best and Brightest Sustainable Companies by the National Best and Brightest Award Symposium.
“Sustainability at Neal Mast and Son is a strategic commitment, “ said Jim Raterink, company co-owner and sustainability champion. “We believe that sustainability helps us to strengthen profitability, support our employees, and be socially responsible. We’re delighted to have achieved such a high CDP score two years in a row; it inspires us to continue the work that we’ve begun.”
The CDP’s annual Supply Chain Program works with more than 60 global purchasing organizations including Walmart, Dell, Unilever, Cisco, and Nestle, to engage suppliers on carbon emission reductions. The rigorous questionnaire includes requests to disclose not only current practices, but also climate risks. In 2014, more than 2,800 suppliers participated in the program. Neal Mast and Son’s score of 99 is one of the highest scores in the program when compared to the average respondent score.
Since 2009, Mosaic Sustainability has offered services to measure greenhouse gas emissions and improve companies’ score on the CDP questionnaire to respondents in the CDP’s S and P 500 Climate Change and Supply Chain Programs. The firm began its partnership with Neal Mast and Son in 2011.
“We want to congratulate Neal Mast and Son on their outstanding CDP score,” said Matt Wood, VP of Consulting for Mosaic Sustainability. “With their integrated sustainability strategy and commitment to reducing climate impact, the company has demonstrated leadership in the SME space and serves as an inspiration to other companies looking to follow their example.”
