Mother’s Day Plant Sale at Habitat for Humanity of Oakland County Benefits WomenBuild
Pontiac, Michigan (PRWEB) April 21, 2014 -- Becoming a successful homeowner requires more than paying a mortgage. It includes maintaining a tidy yard, planting gardens and flowers, and keeping everything in working order, inside and out.
At Habitat for Humanity of Oakland County’s fourth annual Mother’s Day Weekend Flower & Plant Sale, May 9-10, current and aspiring homeowners can learn all this and purchase bulbs and flats at great rates while also learning about how Habitat helps Oakland County residents achieve the goal of home ownership.
Free landscaping/gardening sessions are open to the public. The plant sale offers discounted plants and Mother’s Day flowers, with master gardeners on hand to offer planting advice.
During the second day of the event (Saturday, May 10th), master gardeners will conduct presentations on Basic Landscaping and Design, Curb Appeal and Gardening on a Budget. Proceeds from this event support Habitat-Oakland’s WomenBuild project – a home-build project led by local women, for a female homeowner.
(This year’s WomenBuild project, with a May groundbreaking and August build-out, will take place in Madison Heights. It is for a disabled female homeowner, so the project is not only all-female, it’s also ADA-compliant and a Green Build.)
Along with selling plants at affordable prices, Plant Sale workshops are geared towards homeowners learning to landscape on a budget, as part of Habitat’s ongoing support to “green” (or inexperienced) partner families.
“Our relationship with homeowners doesn't end when we hand over the keys,” says Kim Howard, Habitat’s Manager of Partnerships.
“This is the first home for a number of our families, so we want to make sure they are prepared for the various responsibilities that go along with homeownership. Education is key. We want our homeowners to know that we care about them, are here for them, and want them to be successful.”

We can connect you with experts from Habitat for Humanity of Oakland County as well as partner families who have experienced first-hand the joys of homeownership and yard work with great success. We also have a team of master gardeners who can contribute tips and tricks, including Habitat volunteer Darby McEvilly, the landscaper and horticulture instructor who began this event in 2011.
“This isn’t just a fundraiser,” says McEvilly. “This sale promotes good landscaping and gardening practices, and gives new gardeners and green thumbs alike the chance to purchase plants and beautify homes at reasonable costs.”

On the grounds of Habitat for Humanity of Oakland County’s HQ at 150 Osmun Street in Pontiac.
Mother’s Day flower arrangements will be available for purchase.
