Mothers’ Milk Bank of North Texas Opens 39th Donor Breastmilk Collection Site in Greenville, Texas
Greenville, Texas (PRWEB) July 08, 2015 -- Mothers’ Milk Bank of North Texas (MMBNT) has opened its 39th donor breastmilk depot at Outreach Health Services at 4907 Stonewall Street in Greenville, Texas. Located 45 miles east of Dallas, Outreach Health Services in Greenville is equipped with a freezer and will accept breastmilk donations Mondays through Thursdays from 7-11:30 a.m. and 1-5:30 p.m.
MMBNT Executive Director, Amy Vickers explains, “We call our collection sites like the one in Greenville ‘depots’ because they function as user-friendly and safe satellite storage facilities. Moms have the convenience of a location close to home and milk is kept frozen before it is shipped to us for pasteurization.”
Donor mothers store pumped breastmilk in containers such as breastmilk bags. Bags are labeled with an expression date and frozen before delivery to depots. Once it arrives at the milk bank, donor milk is logged into a sophisticated bar code and tracking system and is then thawed, pasteurized and tested for bacteria. Processed milk is then dispensed by prescription to premature and critically ill infants in tamper resistant bottles.
MMBNT dispensed 441, 295 ounces in 2014 and is on track to process over a half a million ounces in 2015. Currently about 80% of processed milk serves over 100 hospital NICUs and 20% is dispensed to medically needy babies at home. MMBNT’s charitable care program ensures that infants, who need it most, receive donor milk regardless of a family’s financial situation.
Outreach Health Services in Greenville, Texas offers a variety of community health services including WIC services. WIC (Women, Infants and Children) offers nutritional and educational support to pregnant women, new mothers and young children. Breastfeeding peer counselor, Elva Seiler says, “We want to make sure that our moms who produce more milk than their babies need, don’t throw it away. They can bring it to us and we will ensure it helps save the lives of medically needy babies.”
