Affecting the manufacturing of the water heaters, the law change will not require homeowners to replace their existing units, but if they decide to purchase a new system after April 16, only the newly revised water heaters will be available. In order to adhere to the new standards, many units will be built wider and taller than their outgoing models meaning they may not fit into existing spaces. Additionally, the larger size and advanced efficiency will come at a cost with some units increasing in price by up to 35 percent. Homeowners looking to purchase a new unit are encouraged to consult a professional in order to decide whether to buy a pre-standard change unit now, or wait for the more efficient systems after the law goes into effect.
“Not only will these upcoming water heaters be more expensive, but because of the size difference, you may need to perform some remolding in order to make them work,” said Ryan. “Before these hit the market, our technicians can inspect your current system and give you expert advice on your purchasing options and if needed, expedite the installation of a current system that can last you years to come.”
Despite being larger than their outgoing units, the upcoming water heaters are expected to be much more efficient, focusing on what is called ‘energy factor’ which, according to Energy Star.gov, is “the measure of overall efficiency for a variety of appliances.” For these systems, three elements make up a unit’s energy factor: how efficiently the energy source’s heat is transferred to water, the percentage of heat lost per hour from stored water, and the energy lost as the water cycles through the heater tank and/or inlet and outlet pipes. From the change, the United States looks to save about 172.5 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions and approximately $63 billion in energy through 2044.
