MTS Introduces SIL 2 Capable Sensors for Hazardous Area Applications
Cary, NC (PRWEB) January 14, 2015 -- MTS Systems Corporation (NASDAQ: MTSC), a leading global supplier of high-performance test systems and position sensors including liquid level transmitters, today announced the introduction of the new Temposonics® T-Series Sensor product line, specifically designed for use in hazardous areas or safety relevant applications including power generation, oil platforms, and chemical processing, amongst others.
This new sensor is the first linear positioning sensor used in industrial environments that meets the Safety Integrity Level (SIL) 2 standards IEC 61508. T-Series Sensors offer an ATEX and IECEx Zone 0/1, 1, 2 and 21/22 flameproof and a higher safety certification for hazardous areas.
“The T-Series Sensors allow product engineers and developers to offer overall system performance and reliability that isn’t available in these industries today,” explained Matt Hankinson, MTS Sensors Technical Marketing Manager. “Now we can give end-users, who are looking for a higher level of compliance and safety, the product solutions they need at a lower cost without compromising performance or adding maintenance demands.”
MTS Sensors developed the T-Series product after years of market research and customer engagement to address this critical need for the industry. Compared to Linear Variable Differential Transformers (LVDT), the T-Series sensors offer more accurate and consistent position feedback with higher reliability. They are also less susceptible to environmental factors such as EM inference, or shock and vibration. Additionally, since these sensors have no moving parts, they can operate indefinitely with little or no maintenance required. They can be mounted in virtually any space without impeding performance.
“The introduction of this product brings MTS Sensors into new markets and applications,” said Hankin¬son. “The T-Series is more cost effective and performs at or above the performance level of any technology currently used in these applications. In addition, it is the only product to offer SIL 2 capability alongside either flameproof or increased safety hazardous area ratings with sustainable performance. These advancements give us the tools we need to offer new technology to engineers and product developers in numerous applications requiring safety or hazardous area approvals.”
