My Food My Way Gets a Helping Hand from Abbey’s Kitchen
Toronto, ON, CA (PRWEB) July 08, 2013 -- The My Food My Way campaign received a generous donation from its partnership with Abbey’s Kitchen this week. Over $1000 was given to the Toronto-based student nutrition program, part of the proceeds garnered from the inaugural presentation of Abbey’s Kitchen Stadium.
Abbey’s Kitchen Stadium (AKS) is a food event series that combines a pop-up party atmosphere with an Iron Chef-style cooking competition. The first installment of AKS took place on May 26, 2013 at the MOD Club and brought in some of Toronto’s most prominent culinary professionals: Matt Basile from Fidel Gastro’s and Lisa Marie, Matt Pettit from Rock Lobster Co., Rocco Agostino from Pizzeria Libretto and Enoteca Sociale, and Bruce Woods from Woods Restaurant. The chefs were tasked with creating taste-bud-titillating dishes that were then judged by a panel of celebrities.
The celebrity judges for this first “battle” included Bruce Croxon, one of the Dragons from CBC’s Dragon’s Den, James Cunningham, host of Food Network’s Eat St., Jordan Hastings, drummer with Alexisonfire, and Peter Neal, of Neal Brothers Foods. Croxon stated that the event was “a gastronomic delight” and that he was “delighted to be involved in such a worthwhile cause.”
The contribution from AKS will help My Food My Way facilitate student employment in the hospitality industry, and will also go towards the resources needed by its Student Ambassador Program which is mandated to engage Toronto students and transform their food experience.
“My Food My Way is building relationships with leaders in the culinary world to create a sustainable environment for student nutrition,” said John Weatherup, President of the Toronto Education Workers (TEW).The TEW is the union spearheading the My Food My Way campaign jointly with the Toronto District School Board as part of their Healthy Learning Healthy Living initiative.
Not only was the event a successful fundraiser, but it also gave My Food My Way student ambassadors from Thistletown Collegiate the chance to work alongside leading professionals in the local culinary scene. After the event, three of the students were offered jobs in their mentors’ restaurants. Andrea Howe, Thistletown culinary student and My Food My Way ambassador, described her experience saying, “Getting to work with these chefs is an amazing opportunity.”
Abbey Sharp, a Registered Dietitian and popular food blogger, organized the event and understands the need for healthier outcomes when it comes to students. Echoing the philosophy of My Food My Way, Sharp believes that “nutritional education should be about creating a space for young people to have their say, get involved, feel invested and ultimately, make a change that is meaningful to them.”
