MycoWorks Technology Featured by Mazda 'Rebels With A Cause' Campaign
San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) February 13, 2015 -- MycoWorks, a biomaterials design and engineering company based in Silicon Valley, has been selected by Mazda as the newest member of its "Rebels With A Cause" Community: an initiative that honors emerging technologies and ideas that are making a positive impact on the world.
Mazda teamed up with Vice Media UK to produce two short documentaries about MycoWorks. The videos provide an overview of the mycelium-based material technology that MycoWorks has developed, focusing on the wide range of possible applications for these materials and the unique qualities of mycelium composites, including their high compression strength and resistance to heat, flame, and impact, as well as their ability to be grown on industrial and agricultural byproducts.
Mazda’s "Rebels With A Cause" campaign profiles inventors, designers, producers, and engineers whose visionary ideas are changing the world for the better. Recent honorees include a group of young people in Freetown, Sierra Leone, who are building DIY systems to provide reliable electricity to their town, and TED Fellows Andrew Bastawrous, who brought community-funded eye care to Nakuru, Kenya, and Cesar Harada, an engineer who designed a shape-shifting robot to remove pollutants from the ocean following the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

The Mazda Rebels MycoWorks feature includes an interview with CTO Phil Ross that details his expertise in mycelium material cultivation and mycotecture, the practice of designing and building with mycelium. When asked to speculate on the future of mycotecture, Ross answered, “Fungi are proven to be low-energy and low-material consumers so it’s inevitable they’ll play a big part in the future of biomaterials.”
