MyDivorcePapers.com Review: More Siblings? Chances Are, You Won’t Get Divorced, New Findings Reveal
Aliso Viejo, CA. (PRWEB) August 19, 2013 -- Online divorce service MyDivorcePapers.com (MDP) reviewed recent findings in regard to the rate of divorce among persons with siblings and found that the more brothers and/or sisters that one has, the less likely they will get divorced. The findings coincide with a recent study at Ohio State University.
According to the study’s co-author, OSU sociologist Doug Downey, “There are a lot of other factors that affect divorce that are more important than how many siblings you had. However, we're finding that the number of siblings is a factor. ... Each additional sibling reduces their chances of divorce a little bit.”
The findings were being presented this week at a meeting of the American Sociological Association in New York City.
How It Works
Before delving in to the exact findings, it is important to understand what the OSU study and MDP’s own research is NOT saying. Researchers do not believe that being an only child will destine you for divorce, but they have noticed a somewhat consistent trend that persons with one or more sibling fare better in a long-term marriage setting.
Just how much better?
For every sibling that a person has -- maximum of approximately seven -- that person’s likelihood of divorce decreases by about 2 percent, based on data from 57,061 adults collected between 1972 and 2012. This number has stayed consistent with MDP’s own findings, and indicates that persons with siblings have a tendency to hail from more family-oriented environments.
Having a sibling around to always fight and play with also could give one an advantage when it comes to social interaction and conflict resolution.
Brooklyn, New York-based author and researcher Lauren Sandler, however, disagrees. “As much as the culture would tell us we need to have siblings to learn how to manage conflict, all the data actually tell us that school does that just fine," Sandler said in comments to USA Today. (Her book One And Only hit stores earlier in the summer.) “Unless you're raising only children in a situation away from other kids, they will learn those skills with friends and classmates throughout their lives.”
What More Kids Means For Parents
Another side of the research shows that more children may be a good thing for parents as well. According to MDP’s end-of-July report, couples with no children ended up filing for divorce 48 percent of the time. Having just one child meant the odds went down to under 22 percent. Each child after the first reduced a couple’s chances of divorce significantly to the point that couples with more than four children had a less than one percent chance of divorce.
