According to MDP’s end-of-July report, couples whose average weight was between 101 and 200 pounds, were three times more likely to end up filing for divorce. The numbers show that out of 2,708 cases, 2,054 involved individuals in the 101 to 200 pound weight range. That’s close to 76 percent.
The next closest group were those at 201 to 250, who accounted for 493 of the reported cases (approximately 18.21 percent). Just 143 cases occurred after the 250-pound threshold (just 5.28 percent).
From the findings, it can be determined that if you’re signing the divorce papers, you’re more likely to be what is considered “physically fit” than “overweight.”
Height Not A Factor
However, the data did not reveal other factors that might play a role in influencing the weight judgment. For starters, the height of the individuals was an unknown factor, and going from government standards for height-to-weight ratio, it’s entirely possible that some of the individuals in the 101 to 200 pound range might be considered overweight.
Also, the amount of exercise that these individuals engaged in was not considered, nor was their daily diets.
Why Heavier People Don’t Get Divorced As Much
One thing that is known from the data -- individuals in the north-of-250 range don’t get divorced as much, and they’re more likely to be considered “overweight” or “obese” by medical professionals. A number of factors may be responsible for the low rate.
Among them, self-esteem issues. Some of these individuals may be less likely to leave a marriage that isn’t working because of concerns over their body image. But the more likely scenario, according to a recent report from Diet Chef, is that they’re in happier relationships than thinner individuals.
