NAPW Inducts Deborah Turner, Physician / Vice President International Programs at Mercy Medical Center / Outreach, Inc, Into its VIP Professional Woman of the Year Circle
Garden City, NY (PRWEB) July 21, 2015 -- The National Association of Professional Women (NAPW) honors Deborah A. Turner as a 2015-2016 inductee into its VIP Woman of the Year Circle. She is recognized with this prestigious distinction for leadership in business NAPW is the nation's leading networking organization exclusively for professional women, boasting more than 700,000 members and over 200 operating Local Chapters.

Dr. Turner leads her team with 41 years of combined experience in the field of gynecologic oncology. Nominated a Local Legend of Medicine by Rep. Leonard L. Boswell (D-IA-3), Dr. Turner began her career as a Resident in Obstetrics & Gynecology at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics, followed by a Gynecologic Oncology Fellowship at the Anderson Cancer Institute in Houston.
Always a high achiever, Dr. Turner was the first African-American woman to integrate a sorority at Iowa State University, be certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology in the specialty of gynecologic oncology and hired as a gynecological oncologist at the University of Nebraska, University of Iowa and Medical College of Wisconsin.
In 2000, Dr. Turner became Director of Gynecologic Oncology at Mercy Cancer Center in Iowa where she currently continues her directorship. Her continued deep concern for social justice issues and education impelled her to simultaneously pursue and succeed in acquiring a law degree, which she obtained after studying nights and weekends. In addition to making contributions in her field of medicine, Dr. Turner has made civic responsibility a high priority, including serving on the Iowa Board of Regents until 2005.
As of January 2015, Dr. Turner has begun a transition from full-time medical practice into a position as VP of International Programs for Outreach, INC., where she previously served as Volunteer Medical Director. Outreach, INC. is an NGO that works in the areas of hunger, water, medicine and education. Most of their international work is centered in Tanzania where they carry out multidisciplinary medical missions twice a year, have built and run two children's centers, designed and installed several water systems and have started an experimental farm.
