NAPW Members Recognized Stress Awareness and Sexual Assault Awareness Month at April Networking Events
Garden City, NY (PRWEB) May 12, 2015 -- NAPW members came together in April to address two important topics that impact women: stress and sexual assault. Local Chapter events nationwide empowered professional women with tips for de-stressing and workshops that showed them how to protect themselves in different situations. At several events, survivors of assault and abuse spoke out about their own experiences, inspiring Chapter members with their tales of courage to unite and take a stand against sexual violence.
“We all have a unique role in challenging sexual assault, and the professional women of NAPW provide a powerful network of protection,” said NAPW President Star Jones. “Members stepped up and took action with Local Chapter initiatives and events, raising public awareness about sexual violence and educating women about how to protect themselves in any situation.”
In NAPW’s Eastern Region, members and their guests in Forest Hills, NY, heard from a sexual assault awareness advocate and a registered nurse practitioner about their fight against domestic violence. Both urged all women to speak up about sexual assault. Other Local Chapter events that focused on women and stress were held in Scranton, PA, Greensboro, NC and Rockville, MD.
Professional women in Plano, TX, a Local Chapter in NAPW’s Central Region, attended a ‘Stress-ucate Yourself’ workshop where they learned the secrets to lowering stress. In Austin, TX, a life coach presented her tips for de-stressing. The importance of effective communication was the topic of discussion at The Woodlands, TX, Chapter meeting. In West Denver, CO, Nicole Mahobian of Colorado Young Leaders talked about the nonprofit’s mission and goals, while in Colorado Springs, CO, members and guests left stress behind as they enjoyed a happy hour networking event.
“‘Keep Calm and Carry On,’ a quintessential British message that originated during World War II, now appears on everything from coffee mugs to decorative pillows,” said Louise Newsome, NAPW National Director of Local Chapters and NYC Chapter President. “Today, it serves as a mantra to reassure us that if we keep the stress down, we can keep our focus and ultimately reach our goals.”
In NAPW’s Northern Region, Local Chapters did their part to fight sexual abuse: in Akron, OH, the audience was riveted by the courageous story of a sexual assault survivor and the Shaumburg, IL, Chapter held a self-defense workshop where members and guests learned how to protect themselves. “How to Combat Stress” was the topic at other area network meetings: in Western Milwaukee, WI, a hypnotherapist shared the benefits of practicing self-hypnosis; in Columbus, OH, professional women attended a ‘Stress-ucate Yourself’ workshop, and in Orland Park, IL, members and guests got de-stressed by getting creative with a paint brush at a Color Canvas Art Party event.
Professional women in St. Petersburg, FL, attended the Local Chapter’s Women’s Business Expo that featured 12 vendors who offered stress-reducing products and services. Other Chapters in NAPW’s Southern Region, including Columbia, SC, and Palm Beach, FL, hosted guests who helped educate members about what they could do to stand up against sexual violence.
Networking events, stress awareness workshops and learning about one woman’s tale of courage and the positive action she’s taken after suffering sexual abuse were the topics of meetings in NAPW’s Western Region Local Chapters located in Honolulu, HI; Los Angeles, CA; Salt Lake City, UT; and San Jose, CA.
“NAPW members continue to stand united in raising awareness about the important issues women face every day by connecting with one another, staying informed and empowering themselves both professionally and personally,” said Ms. Jones.
