Narconon Freedom Center Issues Prom Season Warning Signs for Parents
(PRWEB) May 22, 2014 -- It’s prom season again, so parents everywhere are seeing their older teens get ready for what could be one of the most memorable nights of their young lives. Prom is seen as the end of childhood for many Americans, and it can be a great occasion to dress up and have one last hurrah with all your high school friends.
If proper precautions aren’t taken, however, it can also be a night that ends in disaster. Prom season is one of the most dangerous times of the year for young people, as drugs and alcohol contribute to more auto accidents and fatalities for teens during these weeks than at any other time of the year.
In order to help make prom season safer for everyone, Narconon Freedom Center will be raising awareness about the dangers of prom season throughout the month.
Drug & Alcohol Use Warning Signs
Be on the lookout as the Freedom Center adds these tips to their website. In addition, as responsible parents, watch out for the following prom season warning signs:
1. Trying to rent a hotel room for an “after party”
If your teen wants to be part of a group that is renting a hotel room, you should be alarmed. The primary reason for renting a room is so that the group can have a private location to drink unimpeded. A group renting a room wants to have a central location away from the homes of their parents where they can also use drugs without oversight. Be on the lookout for this request from your teen and know what it really means.
2. Refusal to agree to a curfew
As a parent, it’s within reason to want your teen to come home at a certain time. There will be lots of other teens drinking and using drugs on the roads during these weekend nights, so it’s a good idea to ask your own child to be home at a certain hour. If your teen resists or outright refuses to come home by the curfew you set, understand that this is a major warning sign. By not agreeing to a curfew, your teen is trying to keep his or her options open for whatever drug use or other “fun” might come up.
3. Unwillingness to tell you who they will be hanging out with
You are also completely within your parental rights to know who your teen will be hanging out with. Your child might not always appreciate it, but you can help ensure that she isn’t hanging out with anyone that openly promotes drug use or that will try to ply her with alcohol. It’s a fine line that you have to walk. You don’t want to step all over your teen’s burgeoning freedom and urge to grow up, but you still need to look out for her safety and make sure that any obvious warning signs are addressed.
4. Spending money and not being willing to talk about where it’s going
Another potential warning sign is if your teen wants to spend money around prom season without being willing to tell you where it’s going. Prom is already expensive enough with having to pay for limos, clothing, flowers, prom tickets, etc. If your teen wants even more money (or is spending his own money but won’t say where), there’s a good chance that the money is going to chip in for the purchase of a keg or for drugs to share. Don’t be complacent or look the other way. Talk to your teen and find out what is going on before it’s too late.
