Narconon New Life Retreat Promotes Drug Education During Alcohol Awareness Month
Baton Rouge, LA (PRWEB) April 23, 2015 -- April is Alcohol Awareness Month and drug prevention efforts are in full swing in Louisiana. Narconon staff members have been distributing materials on to local college campuses, providing drug education lectures to schools in New Orleans and Baton Rouge as well as sponsoring a display in the local library all in an effort to raise awareness about the dangers of Alcohol and Drug Abuse.
By partnering with schools and organizations, Narconon hopes to support other groups and organizations in the area with similar missions. While approaches to drug education and treatment vary, one thing everyone can agree on is that the need for accurate information about the effects of drugs and alcohol is critical to prevention addiction before it begins.
The LSU campus in Baton Rouge was the perfect location for our team of educators to speak directly to the students, regarding the dangers of drinking. Many students stopped to take pamphlets on alcohol use and other drugs, some expressing concerns for a roommate or other friend. This one on one grass roots approach helps bring the issues associated with alcohol abuse full circle to address those problems head on.
In New Orleans, Narconon Staff members provided drug education lectures to approximately one hundred children in elementary schools. The Narconon drug education program is designed to provide accurate drug information in an interactive fun atmosphere, without strong scare tactics associated with other approaches. This format allows students to accept the information without feeling as though they are being scolded.
Talking to community groups is another way Narconon spreads the word. Drug education talks and lectures took place across Baton Rouge delivered in homeless shelters and foster care homes. “I learn things from these kids every day,” says Bryan Wesson, Director of Drug Education Services for Narconon Louisiana. “One kid who was only 11 years old knew about another kid who brought “mojo” to school. I really felt that after our talk, the kids would speak up when things like that happen and choose not to use drugs.”
Later, during a question and answer session, Bryan asked what they had learned. One girl answered, “To tell my mother and my family not to use drugs anymore.” Bryan commented after the session, “That was the point where I realized we had to help these kids if we are going to make a lasting impact on drug addiction.”
