Nashville Gaelic Athletic Club Launches City Hurling League And Unveils Official Club Crest
Nashville, TN (PRWEB) May 15, 2014 -- The Nashville Gaelic Athletic Club (Nashville GAC) announced the launch their inaugural city hurling league Saturday, May 10, the first of its kind in Tennessee. League play will officially begin June 1, though new members will be welcomed at any point after. Three teams will play competitive matches for the duration of the six-week season, culminating in Nashville’s first hurling championship later this summer.
Hurling, a fast-paced, high-scoring field game, is the national sport of Ireland, where it is predominantly played, but is also found in parts of the world where Irish immigrants settled. While many Americans have yet to discover the ancient game, which has been played for over three thousand years, most are familiar with derivatives hockey, field hockey, lacrosse, soccer, and even golf. The Nashville club was founded by husband and wife duo John Watson and Anji Wall, who met while playing with the St. Louis Gaelic Athletic Club.
To commemorate the inaugural season, Nashville GAC also unveiled the club’s official crest, designed by club members Grant Gill and Timothy Ryan Buckley. A guitar silhouette provides the foundation, a nod to our home city’s music roots. At the center, the Tennessee tri-star dominates, accompanied by the Parthenon in Centennial Park, where the club recruits every Thursday evening. Crossed hurleys pay homage to the club’s Gaelic roots. A banner emblazoned with the city’s Irish name, Baile Ceol—translated Music City—and the fleur de lis of our founders’ former club in St. Louis completes the crest. While the crest colors are the American red, white, and blue, the club colors remain green and gold, a tribute to the Blackrock National Hurling Club in Cork, Ireland, which club co-founder Anji Wall’s family has been involved with for many years.
The club will also launch a crowdfunding campaign in the coming weeks to raise money for travel jerseys, equipment, and field use. Supporters who contribute will receive club shirts, bumper stickers, and even sporting equipment. Businesses interested in sponsoring should contact the club to discuss the potential benefits.
