National Aquarium Awarded Conservation Grant
Baltimore, MD (PRWEB) November 14, 2013 -- The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation has awarded a $161,375 grant to National Aquarium in support of its efforts to lead a group of scientists and fishery managers to better understand, explain and address the sources of uncertainty in fisheries management. Uncertainty in stock assessments, effectiveness of management measures and changing ocean conditions are factors that present ongoing challenges in fishery management, even as the United States and other countries end overfishing and work to rebuild depleted stocks.
"We are very appreciative that the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation chose National Aquarium to lead this project,” said Eric Schwaab, National Aquarium Senior Vice President and Chief Conservation Officer. “Addressing these critical uncertainty issues is essential to continuing the nationwide progress of fisheries conservation and underscores the Aquarium's increasing efforts to serve as a national leader in ocean conservation and environmental stewardship."
This project is being undertaken as a part of the Aquarium's growing conservation focus. Under Schwaab’s direction, National Aquarium is working to broaden its national voice and impact in important ocean conservation issues. Schwaab is the former Assistant Administrator and acting Assistant Secretary at NOAA and, until recently, was responsible for much of NOAA's oceans, coastal and fisheries work.
Over the next month, National Aquarium will be assembling a team of U.S. and international experts with social science, stock assessment science and management experience to consider the current state of work on fisheries uncertainty. Using a case study approach, the group is expected to analyze current challenges, make recommendations for improvement and issue a report focusing on best practices in addressing uncertainty in fisheries management. The final report will be released early next summer.
