National Campus Sexual Assault Summit to Be Held at Georgetown Law: Prevention, Empowerment and Policy
Washington, DC (PRWEB) September 20, 2013 -- September is National Campus Safety Awareness Month and the national nonprofit PAVE: Promoting Awareness, Victim Empowerment is convening the first ever National Campus Sexual Assault Summit that will focus on violence prevention with bystander intervention, empowerment of survivors, and policy including Title IX, The Clery Act and the Campus Sexual Violence Elimination (SaVE) Act. The National Campus Sexual Assault Summit will be convened on Friday, September 27, at Georgetown Law from 12:30pm-5:00pm featuring special guest Sarah Rice from MTV. This Summit is being broadcast live via webcast to over 300 colleges across the country.
According to the US Department of Justice, at least one in four college women will be a victim of sexual assault during her academic career. Recent coverage of the treatment of a rape victim at a major university shows how poorly designed procedures coupled with uninformed policies and a disconnected culture re-victimized the victim.
Angela Rose, Founder of PAVE said, “We are galvanizing the collective and collaborative national movement on college campuses to enable students to have a learning environment free from harassment, violence and fear. Moreover, countless survivors are re-victimized by institutions and even fellow students when they attempt to seek justice – that has to change.”
Two outspoken survivors of campus sexual assault who have received national media attention for their fight for justice – Laura Dunn and Wendy Wyler - will be present and available for interview. PAVE's efforts boldly aspire to one day transform our nation into one free from sexual assault and ensure that no victim ever feels alone or disempowered.
The National Campus Sexual Assault Summit is a part of the Safe Campus, Strong Voices campaign, which is a partnership between PAVE: Promoting Awareness, Victim Empowerment and the Clery Center for Security On Campus. Over 400 colleges across the country have downloaded the Safe Campus, Strong Voices tool-kit.
