National CyberWatch Center Enlists as Data Privacy Day Champion and Commits to Protecting and Safeguarding Privacy
Largo, Maryland (PRWEB) January 27, 2016 -- Consumers and businesses aren’t as safe as they may seem on the Internet. Knowing how to stay protected online is part of the mission of the National CyberWatch Center as a Champion of Data Privacy Day (DPD). This day is observed annually on Jan. 28.
Being a Champion means the National CyberWatch Center recognizes and supports the principle that organizations, businesses and governments share the responsibility of being stewards of personal information by respecting privacy, safeguarding data and enabling trust.
Data Privacy Day brings awareness worldwide to encourage Internet users to consider the privacy implications of their online actions and motivate all companies to make privacy and data protection a priority. The National CyberWatch Center has contributed to the global effort of organizations, corporations, educational institutions, government entities, and municipalities to raise awareness and educate consumers about how their personal information may be collected, the benefits and risks of sharing personal information and the nature and scope of online data usage. Through collaborative efforts and unified, consistent messaging about data privacy, all DPD Champions work toward improving consumer consciousness and empowering everyone to protect their privacy.
“Data Privacy Day allows us to discuss a myriad of topics related to Information Security and privacy; conversations such as the ongoing challenges of sharing data while protecting personally identifiable information, or how to empower students to express their expectations for the use, protection and management of their personal data.” said Casey W. O’Brien, executive director of National CyberWatch Center. “As a Champion and participant in the national Data Privacy Day, the National CyberWatch Center continues to raise awareness for our member and partner institutions that help them better understand how their personal information may be collected and the benefits and risks of sharing personal data.”
Spearheaded by the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA), DPD began in the United States and Canada in January 2008 as an extension of Europe’s Data Protection Day. The day commemorates the 1981 signing of Convention 108, the first legally binding international treaty addressing privacy and data protection.
