National Drowning Prevention Alliance Names APSP's DiGiovanni Director
Alexandria, VA (PRWEB) July 16, 2015 -- The Association of Pool & Spa Professionals (APSP) announces Carvin DiGiovanni, vice president, Technical & Standards, has been appointed by the National Drowning Prevention Alliance (NDPA) as a Board Director. His two year term began July 1, 2015.
NDPA is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to saving lives through drowning prevention and water safety efforts. Its mission statement is “United, we can prevent the tragedy of drowning.” The NDPA believes that by working together as a strong alliance, drowning can be prevented through collaboration and education.
“I am honored to serve on the board of NDPA and work to prevent the tragedy of drowning,” said DiGiovanni. “By working together, we can enhance the mission of the NDPA by maximizing efforts to raise consumer awareness while our children enjoy the fun and health benefits of swimming pools and spas.”
Since 1983, APSP has been accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) as the Standards Development Organization for the nation's pool and spa standards and now counts 13 American National Standards under its purview to protect millions of pool, spa and hot tub users. These national consensus standards establish voluntary minimum guidelines that, when adopted by governments and agencies, have the force of law.
“For example the ANSI/APSP-16 2011 Standard for Suction Fittings for Use in Swimming Pools, Wading Pools, Spas and Hot Tubs is federal law, incorporated into the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act (VGB),” said DiGiovanni. “This adoption into law ensures that pools and spas will provide a safer, more enjoyable backyard experience for years to come.”
Similarly, the International Code Council (ICC) has incorporated the ANSI/APSP standards into the International Swimming Pool & Spa Code (ISPSC) which, when adopted at the state and local level, will require residential pools and spas to have the same level of safety protection that the VGB Act mandates for public pools and spas.
