National Grid Announces Support for White House Methane Reduction Strategy
Waltham, Mass. (PRWEB) January 14, 2015 -- As part of President Obama’s Climate Action Plan, the White House announced goals to reduce methane emissions from the natural gas and oil industries. National Grid, the largest distributor of natural gas in the Northeast, continues to support policies and programs that address methane reductions in a meaningful, cost-effective, and environmentally conscious manner.
“Methane has an impact on climate and National Grid remains committed to reducing our own emissions and to working with EPA on solutions that produce environmental benefits and limit cost impacts to our customers,” said Tom King, President, National Grid U.S. “We’ve worked with both EPA and environmental organizations such as the Environment Defense Fund to foster policy and deploy technology in our natural gas networks that detect methane emissions and inform strategy.”
Efforts by natural gas companies have resulted in significant reductions of methane emissions already, according to EPA’s own data. But along with the steps announced today and public-private partnerships such as the Downstream Natural Gas Initiative and One Future Coalition, we continue moving forward to promote transparency and encourage policies necessary to achieve environmental, energy security and economic goals.
