National Hispanic Scientist of the Year Award Gala to Sell Out
Tampa, Fla (PRWEB) October 06, 2014 -- Tickets are limited for the Museum of Science & Industry’s annual fundraiser – the National Hispanic Scientist of the Year (NHSOY) gala on Saturday, Oct. 11. This year, the gala honors Rafael L. Bras, Ph.D., renowned civil engineer who currently serves as the provost and executive vice president for Academic Affairs at the Georgia Institute of Technology's School of Civil and Environmental Engineering. This year’s gala also honors Ana Maria Rey, Ph.D., theoretical physicist professor at University of Colorado at Boulder as the 2014 Early Career Honoree. Proceeds from the gala fund MOSI's YES! Team, a career and educational enrichment program designed to help at-risk youth develop and progress in a supportive, peer-group environment. Those interested in supporting the YES! Those interested in hearing Dr. Bras and Dr. Rey speak can also buy tickets for Tampa’s only S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) Professional Leadership Forum, where they will serve as panelists, on Thursday, Oct. 9. With a prestigious panel of scientists, artists and entrepreneurs, the S.T.E.A.M Professional Leadership Forum will provide Bay area residents the chance to discuss the opportunities and challenges that the region faces as it strives to embrace creativity and become a leader in S.T.E.A.M education.
The panel will be moderated by Joe Hodges, president and CEO of INETICO, Inc. Featured panelists include Dr. Rafael L. Bras, best known for his contributions in soil-vegetation-atmosphere system modeling, Dr. Ana Maria Rey, noted for her research into ultra-cold atoms, Santiago Echeverry, Associate Professor of Art at the University of Tampa and Carrie Scheiner, CEO and founder of Exploracise, a program that creatively teaches math facts during a complete workout.
“MOSI wants to take this weekend to elevate scientists to rock star status. When do kids ever have an opportunity to just hang out and chat with the great minds of our generation?” says Molly Demeulenaere, Interim CEO and President of MOSI. “We want to inspire them and let them know they can do anything they set their minds to – regardless of where they came from or what they have gone through.”
The STEAM Professional Leadership Forum will take place at MOSI on Thursday, Oct. 9. Networking will begin at 11:30 a.m. Lunch and panel discussions will begin at noon. Tickets for the forum and lunch are $35, MOSI members and student tickets are $25. There will be a limited number of tickets available the day of the event for $45 per person.
