National MTM Advisory Board Releases Consensus Definition of Drug Therapy Problem
Des Moines, IA (PRWEB) December 30, 2013 -- Comprised of payor, provider and consumer representatives from the Medication Therapy Management (MTM) industry, the National MTM Advisory Board has released its consensus definition of a Drug Therapy Problem.
Members of the Advisory Board believed a definition was lacking but needed.
“It is critically important that Medication Therapy Management services evolve with the rest of healthcare,” said David Coffee, PharmD, MBA, Clinical Program Manager at Medica. “That evolution is clearly from process-oriented measures to more results-oriented metrics.”
In recent years, much of the focus within MTM has been placed on the Comprehensive Medication Review (CMR). The advisory board previously adopted and published positions regarding the definition of the Comprehensive Medication Review as well as the delivery of CMRs in long-term care settings.
“The CMR is an important service,” said Robert Narveson, President & CEO, Thrifty White Drug. “But the goal of the CMR and MTM services overall is to resolve drug therapy problems. Adopting a standard definition for the outcome of successfully-delivered MTM services allows us collectively to focus on what matters most—enhancing patient care.”
Formed in 2010, the National MTM Advisory Board meets regularly to discuss and provide direction within the MTM industry. OutcomesMTM provides administrative support to the board.
