National Patient Safety Foundation Announces Agreement with BMJ Quality & Safety
Orlando, FL (PRWEB) May 16, 2014 -- The National Patient Safety Foundation (NPSF), a central voice for patient safety since 1997, today announced that BMJ Quality & Safety, an international, peer-reviewed journal published by BMJ, will become an official journal of NPSF, effective July 1, 2014. Members of the Foundation’s individual membership program, the American Society of Professionals in Patient Safety (ASPPS), will receive online access to the journal as a benefit of membership. Organizations belonging to the NPSF Stand Up for Patient Safety program will be able to subscribe to the print journal at a special member rate.
Also as part of the agreement, Tejal K. Gandhi, MD, MPH, CPPS, president of NPSF, will join the journal’s editorial advisory board. Dr. Gandhi announced the agreement prior to a keynote presentation by Kaveh Shojania, MD, editor-in-chief of BMJ Quality & Safety, at the 16th Annual NPSF Patient Safety Congress being held this week in Orlando, Fla.
“We are extremely pleased to be partnering with one of the most distinguished and widely read journals in the field,” Dr. Gandhi said. “This collaboration puts invaluable research into the hands of our members, who are working every day to improve patient safety and health care quality around the globe.”
“We have strived to maintain a journal that advances the science of patient safety while also remaining useful to frontline staff, managers, and safety officers working every day to improve care,” said Dr. Shojania. “NPSF is an organization that similarly recognizes the value of rigorous research while supporting the important pragmatic work being done in hospitals and clinics across the country. I am thrilled that NPSF has chosen to make BMJQS an official journal.”
BMJ Quality & Safety is one of more than 50 specialist titles published by global health care knowledge provider BMJ. Issued monthly, its content includes news, opinion, debate, and research articles that focus on the science of improvement in the context of health care delivery.
“Our goal at BMJ Quality & Safety is to integrate the academic and clinical aspects of quality and safety in health care,” said Janet O’Flaherty, publisher of the journal. “We are very pleased to bring Dr. Gandhi’s expertise in patient safety to our editorial advisory board and to reach the NPSF membership base, which is truly a reflection of our audience—clinicians, researchers, patient advocates, and those in health leadership positions.”
ASPPS is the first individual membership organization with patient safety as its organizing principle. It was created in 2011 to provide a community of like-minded professionals seeking to advance patient safety across the continuum of care.
The NPSF Stand Up for Patient Safety program is a membership program for health care systems and other organizations committed to improving the safety of the health care system. Membership benefits include educational tools and programs that member organizations can share with their staff.
