National Resident Matching Program® Executive Director Mona M. Signer Presents at AAMC 2013 Annual Meeting
Washington, D.C. (PRWEB) November 21, 2013 -- The National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) Executive Director, Mona M. Signer, presented her annual “NRMP Update” in two sessions at the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) 2013 Annual Meeting in Philadelphia, PA on November 1, 2013. Signer’s presentations highlighted important NRMP Match statistics and data, the success of the All In Policy, and useful information about the Main Residency Match® for graduate medical education training institutions and programs.
“It was a pleasure to have the opportunity to speak to the AAMC audiences about Match data and policies and the innovative new online tools the NRMP has developed to assist Match applicants and training institutions with the residency matching process,” said Signer.
The most important data from the presentation emphasized the success of the NRMP All In Policy implemented in 2013. Under this policy, match rates rose for all applicants except U.S. allopathic seniors, whose match rate nonetheless was within the historical norm of about 94%. In addition, the number of positions reached an all-time high of 29,171 and the position fill rate exceeded 96%.
Signer also highlighted information from the 2013 Applicant Survey, noting that geographic location was the most important consideration when applicants selected programs for interviewing and ranking, followed by the reputation of the program and the quality of the curriculum and training. Survey findings also showed that unmatched applicants submitted more applications in their preferred and alternate specialties than did their matched counterparts, but were offered and attended fewer interviews.
The NRMP Match
The Match uses a computerized mathematical algorithm to align the preferences of applicants with the preferences of residency program directors in order to fill training positions available at U.S. teaching hospitals. Research on the NRMP algorithm was a basis for awarding the 2012 Nobel Prize in Economics.
